Class Description

AI is popping up seemingly everywhere. Not just computers and phones, but household appliances, healthcare, media and even grocery pricing. Some say it will save us; others say it will destroy us. As with most things, the truth lies between the exaggerated claims. In this course you’ll learn what AI really is and how it works. In an accessible, non-technical way we’ll explore its checkered history and its current applications, both beneficial and nefarious. We’ll examine the sensational claims that it will match or exceed human intelligence. And we’ll discuss the serious issues it raises such as job displacement and extreme power usage. AI is already in wide use. We use it without being aware of it. This course will make you much more aware and able to knowledgeably evaluate what you hear about it. This course is an update and extension of the LLC Demystifying Artificial Intelligence course presented in summer 2024. About two thirds of the material is different or new, including the jokes.
