New Voices: Book & Movie Club

with Deepali Baumann

Class Description

We will read India: A Traveler's Literary Companion (July 20, 2010), edited by Chandrahas Choudhury, with a foreword by Anita Desai. This collection features 14 short stories by some of India’s finest writers, offering a rich portrait of the country’s diverse landscapes, cultures, and societies. Representing nine languages and over a dozen distinct regions—from north to south, east to west, and even the remote northeast—these stories provide a window into India’s complexity. Additionally, we may watch relevant Indian documentaries and films based on class preferences. To truly understand India—the world’s largest democracy and most populous nation—one must navigate its vast tapestry of languages, dialects, religions, castes, and cultures, all of which defy easy categorization or complete comprehension. This is just the beginning. Mondays, 11:00 - 12:30 LLC ZOOM Class Limit: 10
